Land of Matissia

Inspiration for this design came from Russian folktales for children about Zhar-ptica, and from the painting “Ivan Tsarevich Catching the Firebird’s Feather” by illustrator Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin. In the West, the Russian Zhar-ptica is known as the Phoenix. My challenge in this design was creating the bird’s tail feathers. One day I saw Diane Fitzgerald’s pattern for a paisley design and immediately knew how to complete my necklace.
