    My store-bought jumprings break! Help!

    Hello Fellow Beaders,

I had bought some 20 ga. gold-filled jumprings about 2 years ago.  When I used them last week, they broke!  Is this to be expected?  I thought moving the jumpring side to side before finally closing it is supposed to work harden the rings.  Instead the jumprings broke.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

My first guess would be you work-hardened them too much.  Also, are you twisting inly back and forth?  You should be pushing them "in" towards each other, so that they snap closed.

I've been doing some research about the jump rings breaking...it seems that you are right...some twisting back and forth and ALSO towards each other is a good thing, but, if the rings are worked too much, they become brittle and break.  so much info. to learn...
