July 17 Update: Scroll down for more photos.

July 9 Update: We have been building a giant tetrahedrons in the back yard. Check it out... http://batcountry.liquid.net/index.php/Construction_Updates http://batcountry.liquid.net/index.php/Construction_Updates_2 And I should have another page of updates posted soon! Cheers, gwen Original Post:

     Hi,

My BF and I have been working on building a giant beaded bead out of baseball bats, baseballs, and a whole lot of steel to show at Burning Man 2008.

You can read all about it here, and see tons of illustrations.

Be sure to check out the beadwork I'm selling at a silent auction to raise money for all of those baseball bats!

I'd love to hear you comments!  Thanks for looking.

Wow, what a fun project! A fitting tribute to Sierpinski! I took a look at the project website for details about the silent auction, but the address for the fundraiser is not listed. Can I sign up for an evite for the fundraiser details or will this information be posted on the website? Thanks!

Cindy, once I got my BF involved with beads, he thought BIG right away! hahah

Chinda, I sent you an email about the party.  Thanks for your interest!

I'm now going to put another pair of earrings on the private auction page...

As soon as I saw it, I wanted to climb it. I would love to see it when it is constructed!!!

Very cool project... Is this something that is going to be constructed at burning man on sight? Or will you assemble the pieces somewhat before arriving? I've only seen photos of the burning man events, but they always look interesting & lots of fun.

Cindy, you can climb on it.  Just come join us at Burning Man and it will be your playground!

Alex,  Thanks for you comments. We will partially build it before leaving... we plan to assemble the 64 "little" tetrahedrons (each about 2.5 feet high), then stack them, and load them into a moving van to transport.  Once we arrive at Burning Man, we will assemble the 64 little tetrahedrons into one giant one.  I've seen lots of photos too, but I've never been, so this should be fun!  Fortunately, I've got a possy of folks who I'll be traveling with, who are old timers at this event.  So, I think I'll be well taken care of.

    hahah

I must be totally dense today. I looked all over the Burning Man website, but could not figure out where and when it's all happening. It sounds totally cool, and I would love to go, but cannot commit without those teensy little details . . .

    Hi Cindy,

Burning Man 2008 is August 25 to September 1 in Nevada, east of Reno.   The Playa is near Empire / Gerlach.

That is some insane amount of work! It looks like the construction is going to be pretty strong. Are you going to rent a uhaul trailer to haul all of the pieces to the burning man?

Yes we are. Surpisingly, all of the pieces will fit in an SUV, but we're also going to need 10 days of camping supplies, so we're renting a U Haul. Last night, we got Gen 2 done, with 96 baseball bats. Here are a couple of highlights. View from the ground: Goto http://batcountry.liquid.net/index.php/Construction_Updates_3 to see more tons more photos and read about how we did it. Thanks, gwen

Chinda, thanks for finding that and posting it here. Too bad the smoke ring got top billing.

Now that I'm home, I finally posted some photos of Bat Country at Burning Man.  Here are a few of my favorites:
