    liver of sulfer

I have made some pmc charms with rubber stampings and I want to get the words/imprints black to stand out on the silver but want to keep the rest silver...is this where I use liver of sulfer I've tried using the egg method and it tarnished the whole piece and I could'nt get it to it's original siver and it didn't really do much for the imprint..   does liver of sulfer have to bought thru the internet or do hardware or home depot type stores carry it??

    thanks for any help...

    Re: liver of sulfer

I purchased the LoS online, just can't remember from where since it was so long ago.  A little goes a LONG way.

To get just the engraving to darken, the LoS can be painted on the letter so it fills the impression leaving the rest without the patina.  I have done this often on very detailed impressions.  Also makes it easier to shine up the parts I want shiny.

EDIT: I just saw that you are doing this on pmc... that is much more porous than sterling/argentium etc.  If you burnish the parts you don't want to take the patina before applying the LoS, the clean up will go much easier.

Deezigns, I have done a lot of bench tests with Liver of Sulfur in addition to writing some articles and presenting the information at the Metal Clay conferences, so I put together a tutorial to make it easier for the rest of the world to enjoy the great patinas you can get from LOS. Here is the link:

    To answer your questions:
You can get LOS at any store that sells jewelry supplies or Metal Clay.

Have you tried removing the patina on the high areas with a polishing cloth, 3mm pro polishing pads? You can put the patina everywhere and remove it in this manner or you can put the LOS on with a smal brush in just the crevices, but unless you have a VERY steady hand, you will also need to use the polishing method to remove it where you accidentally got it in adjacent areas.

Check out the tutorial and it should answer any misc. questions you have, but feel free to contact me if it does not.

It sounds like liver of sulfur will work well for your project. You will be able to dip the whole piece, then polish with steel wool or a coarse brush to bring the majority back to bright silver. The imprinted areas should remain dark.

I don't know that I've seen it anywhere other than some beading stores, and mostly stores that specialize in metal work. You can buy LoS online at http://www.beadshopboutique.com/878.html or call 650 383 3408 to buy over the phone.

I'd be interested to see if it works out with the imprinting. Post pics when done!
