    Strong enough for toggle ring?

I hope you polymer clay experts can help me out!

The piece of jewelry I usually wear at my shows is a necklace with a PMC toggle ring and an embellished plastic lizard (from your garden-variety dollar store "bag -o-lizards") for the toggle bar. I've attached a photo. The ring is maybe 1.5" in diameter.

I always get asked if I have other pieces like it. I don't, but obviously, I should! I don't want to use PMC. Would a toggle ring made of polymer clay be sturdy enough? From my minimal experience with polymer clay, it seems that pieces that are on the thin side are prone to break. But maybe I'm doing something wrong.

     Suggestions are welcome!

Since you haven't gotten an answer yet, could you use a plastic resin, bone or wooden ring in a similar size and shape?

If that doesn't appeal to you, you might want to ask your question in the ArtJewelry forum. The polymer clay folks decided to stick together as a group, and appear to have "moved" there. If you get an answer, maybe you could post it here.

Freckafree, You may use polymer clay, just don't make it too thin.  You could also use a large metal washer and cover it with cording that complements the colors of the necklace.  I really like the one you have posted, by the way.  The lizard idea is unique.  Do you wear it with the lizard in front?  Jeanie

Re: Strong enough for toggle ring?

A polymer clay toggle ring would be strong enough if you made it a bit thicker. If you are concerned about strength make your toggle in two pieces cut them first and strengthen with some 26 ga. craft wire in circles laid on the bottom piece.  Wipe with liquid polymer to attach the two thicknesses together well. Roll with a brayer and then make sure your run your finger around the edges so you are unable to see it is two pieces. Then cure in the oven according to pc directions. The wire would reinforce it and make it very strong. . . . . .
