    $- Adding music to websites

On YouTube or other sites, it is not uncommon to hear a popular song played. I would love to have the option of a particular song the Frank Sinatra song played on my site. My husband says you have to pay for rights to do so. Beading is costing me enough as it is, I don't want to add an extra cent if I can avoid it.

Any experience of advice would really be appreciated.

    Thanks.                                                                                                                                Mary

Yes, you wouldn't be able to use it w/o permission.  Sure, people use music for Youtube, but what you don't notice is how many vids get pulled once the copyright owners contact them.  Youtube itself doesn't police its site; it relies on the "honor system" that posters understand copyright law and will abide.  They will pull violating vids if they are contacted by copyright holders, but as you can imagine, it's not a very effective guard against infringement.  This is quite an issue with artists like Prince, et al.

I'm sure you wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of the Sinatra estate. :P

Personally, I hate being accosted by music when I visit a site.  Often, I have my own stuff playing or I'm trying to "surf quiet" to let others sleep.

Lisa, thanks so much for your response. This is what my husband was saying.

I have to agree with Lisa here.  I don't like music on web sites.  Its slows my browsing down, takes a while to load and generally my surfing is my "quiet time."

Actually I once thought it would be cute to underline the word bauble in my text when I make reference to Frank Sinatra's "Baubles, Bangles and Beads " and have it link to the song for whoever wanted it.  I would never have it just play as background. Anyway, it was a passing thought and probably no one would care for it as much as I did. Lol.

Actually, that sort of appeals to my sense of fun!

Yeah, I love that I'm not alone in my thinking. My website is only partially up - it is called sassybaubles.com. It just would lend itself so beautifully in the one sentence that I tell how Sinatra's song inspired the name. But I do have to forget it I guess --- unless someone can give me an easy, legal way to do it. (Guess I haven't totally forgotten it, have I???)

I do thank you for your response.

Why not incorporate it into your banner?  Quick and dirty, but you get the idea:

You're allowed to quote partial text with credit, so I'd just credit the company who publishes the music to that song somewhere on your front page.  (Footer, perhaps?)

If you don't want to do that, why not incorporate it into your intro text on the first page?  It's a great reference, I think.

After all, "It's Sinatra's world.  We just live in it."  LOL

Hi Mary, It might be worth bearing in mind that a lot of people browse sites when they are at work and might not appreciate a sudden burst of music telling their colleagues that they are not working but surfing.  Also I'm in rural France and have very slow internet and I hate any sites with too many bells and whistles that take an age to load.

    Good luck with your site
