Re: Questions for Seasoned seeders and beading newbies.......

I have to admit, I am a new newbie to the different stitches.  I asked a question about the stitches about a year ago.  I got too frustrated with the amount of information I could find in books and online that I gave up, until recently.  Now, I am slowly learning new stitches.  I have even started buying the magazine again just to see if I could make any of the projects.

Peyote is my favorite stitch with the spiral rope in a close second.

What sort of projects do you feel are lacking in current beading publications and books?  I don't see any projects that are lacking really.  For me being a new beginner, it's projects that aren't so challenging.  Sorry to all the experienced people.  I would also love to see how to attach different clasps.  Or even how to make your own.  I have several projects waiting for me to attach clasps to because I could not find the directions on how to do it.

What sort of stitches would you like to see more use of? No preference again.  I want to learn all the techniques I can.

What do you feel you would like to see a new take on?  How instructions are presented.  I agree, I couldn't follow any of them when I tried.  VERY frustrating and the reason why it took me so long to find a tutorial that actually helped me.

What are you already so bored of seeing?  The same designs seem to be popping up all the time.  Would like to see varied designs on different stitches.  Maybe not always a necklace or bracelet using a stitch but other forms that stitch can take, a doll, a pin, earrings,

What would be refreshing for you to read in the next beading book/mag?  How to incorporate the different stitches into one project ~ easily.

I am Navajo but not gifted with that eye for color mixtures seen on so many American Indian (that is what we still refer to ourselves as because we still think every American born person is a native American and should be acknowledged as such) projects, but it digress.

Peyote is my very fave stitch, however, I am about to figure out square stitch for making closed boxes and the like.  B and B is my very primary source for bead ideas.  I would like to see more bead art in addition to jewelry projects and more intricate color ideas, i.e., Eastern European tile themes and Persian motifs, to help me stretch in my limited use of color motifs. .

Also, i love working with Czech size 15 beads,.  I look at beadweaving as creating fabric that can be woven in to  almost anything.  Czech size 15 feels and works up like fabric.  Peyote is my fave stitch b/c it creates strong jewelry, yet still feel like fabric, it is not so stiff in size 15.  So more Czech size 15 projects that are not necessarily jewelry, more three dimensional projects and more intricate and detailed patterns, perhaps with ancient historical themes. Oh, also really great sliders for necklaces and bracelets.

    Thanks for posing this question.

Bored of stringing, unless you've made your own beads - if you're only using bought beads it's kind of an entry level technique. I want to see more structural/3 dimensional techniques and am really getting into bead crochet, but am getting bored with ropes - would like to see more advice on how to bead crochet flat or in the round. I think there's a lot of potential in bead crochet but have yet to find a free-to-use project for flat crochet. I think dimensional is the way to go - using the beads for structure not just colour.

I have to agree with most of the beaders here and say that peyote is getting stale.  I like peyote, but only in its 3d form, and all those flat patterns for bracelets, wall hangings, and amulet bags are driving me crazy!  I am also tired of all the delicas, I only use Czech seeds and there are never any patterns for them.

I would love to see more patterns for cross-needle weave using Japanese techniques. In it's 3d form it is truly amazing and I can't find any English patterns for it!  I also would love to see more netting, and I am BEGGING FOR MORE BEADED BEADS!!  There's almost no better way to use size 11 seeds than that!!

When it comes to B & B magazine, I have to say that there are too many projects using hard to find or overly expensive supplies.  And where are the buttons?  I made a loopy cuff charm bracelet using only seed beads and buttons and it is one of the most talked about pieces I have ever made.  Buttons are amazing, and if you go to your local fabric store there are some that are just as beautiful as, if not more than the beads we buy.  There should be more patterns to include them, and not just for clasps!

I don't like metal clay, and I'm not a big fan of huge pieces for around the neck that are pretty to look at but not really wearable.

In books I agree that there are many techniques from around the world that are not being explored and used.  Everyone talks about older books to buy that have all these great ideas and techniques in them, why can't we have those in our magazines?  If all that is old is new again, let's bring it out!!

On the whole, B & B is the only beading magazine I subscribe to, but I would love to see it improve as well.  Thanks!!

Re: Questions for Seasoned seeders and beading newbies.......

OK, I can understand why everyone is tired of the peyote patterns, most lately have been very blah, but I am still very addicted to it, it is my relaxation technique between (or during!) other projects where I am learning new stitches or reworking old ones.

I love the idea of more history and more international stitches/projects.

I think the projects in the mag are pretty diversified, hate the stringing ones personally, but to each his/her own.

I like any and all stitches, have not ever had a problem with the directions (?) in the mag, and over the last few years have used them to learn new stitches.

What am I bored with?  Well, wireworking and clay hold absolutely no interest to me at the present, but you never know where your interests will go in the future!  Plus, I'm sure there are those who absolutely love all that.

I really think the mag is doing a good job reflecting the interests of a large group of very diversified crafters, maybe just needs a slight return to roots by remembering the button aspect a little more?

I'd like to read more about history and manufacturing.

I'd also like to learn more about advanced finishing techniques.  In particular, if there are going to be projects on stringing, I'm more interested in how the piece is finished (well) than the order of the beads. I'd like to see how different clasps, crimps, and threads can be used to finish the pieces professionally and cleanly.  I think specific instructions with more illustrations and/or photos would be very helpful.  I already know how to crimp and use a knot, so I'm talking about more interesting finishes than that.

Lastly, charted peyote stitched projects hold no interest for me.  I'd never make one.
