    working with a wigjig

I have a wigjig and I ordered some different pegs.  The pegs aren't all the same size, so some are more loose or less loose then others.  Is that normal?  Is that going to be a problem in the designs I create using the wigjig?

They should be a little loose so they will slip in and out of the holes when you are moving them around to set them or change them for the design on which you are working.  You might have to practice a bit to get the feel of it - while you are working the wire around if you swoop up you might catch a peg just right and lift it out, but that should be pretty rare.

I am fairly new to jewelry making and want to purchase a wire jig.  What is the best one to get?

    Thanks for any info available.

Hands down, a wigjig.  They have several models and I suggest you go to www.wigjig.com and look at what's available.  You can sort all of their tutorials by which jig was used, which will help you figure out which one might be best for you.  You can also use the tutorials to see what extra pegs you might want to get, based on what you think you might want to make.

The reason I prefer the wigjig over any other is that it's see-through, plus the fact that there are so many sizes of pegs from which to choose.  I can draw a shape on paper and place the jig over it and see the design in order to select the pegs and figure out where to place them.

I have 2 wigjigs, and I think the centaur is the most versatile and useful for jewelry making. It can be used for both square and round peg patterns.  I also like the sets of various diameters of pegs.  Very good quality, also.

I would also recommend the Centaur Wig Jig. I think it is slightly more expensive as it has a two-in-one versatility of where you can place the pegs. I am very happy with mine.

I have the aluminum wire jig.  Just got it over the weekend.    It came with pegs and some clear short tube pieces.  Is it a correct assumption that the clear tubes are to put over the pegs to increse the size slightly of the smaller pegs?

Also, is there much difference between the WigJig aluminum wire jig and the Thing-a-ma-jig aluminum jig?

    Thanks.

    Hello!

We always recommend a Wig Jig Olympus if you're just starting out, they're pretty versatile. It is def. worth checking that you've bought the right pegs for your jig. Hope this helps!

We over here in rainy England do stock a good variety of jigs, and ship to the US, take a look http://www.mailorder-beads.co.uk/ (Bottom right)

    Best Wishes

I, too have the Centaur, and love it! I think those tube-like pieces are for helping to flatten or "set" your loops. Make the loop, and then slip the tube over the peg and press down. It is easier and safer than using your pliers, and helps keep the work from riding up on the pegs.

I posted a piece over at the Art Jewelry forum that used the WigJig Centaur. If you'd like to see it go to:

The possibilities for this jig are really limitless!

Thanks Perri.  I had used them on the under side to hole the pegs better.  Your method is a good one and I plan upon using it.

Sorry for not replying sooner! The band was made with the help of a WigJig Centaur, the top is my own design. I did send a note of thanks and a pic to Gary Helwig for both his site and the product. I really don't think it could have been made so neatly without this great jig. He was kind enough to post it in the customer feedback area along with a link to my blog.

I currently am in the process of creating a tutorial for the weave and another ring version. If you like, I'll post when it is done or drop a private line. Thanks for the compliment!
