    I want a blog

I'm thinking about starting a blog but I am completely ignorant when it comes to doing anything like this. I want to start a blog to showcase my jewelry and get it out there where others besides my circle of family and friends can see it.  I bead just part time so I don't have a steady income from it to warrant a website.  Maybe down the road I could handle paying for a website.....

I searched for information on starting a blog and there were so many different ideas, and terms I did not understand that my head is spinning!

Do any of you have just a blog rather than a website for your jewelry?

Where can I learn about blogs in plain and simple terms that will not make my head spin?

Any advice on how and where to start? (Again--plain and simple terms please)

Any advice on how to make my blog work for me and be seen?

Finally, let's say the blog turns out to be a not-so-good idea as the only place to show my jewlery.  What are the advantages/disadvantages to setting up a free website?  Are there hosting and domain charges associated with a free website?  Any really good ones out there?

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Re: I want a blog

    Hi Alice,

Wowzers - lots of questions and I'll try to do my best to help out.

I started out with a website and only started my blog a little over a week ago. My blog is in Italian, but if you'd like to take a look, you'll find it at http://larteaddosso.myblog.it/.  I wouldn't choose to set up a blog on the same blogsite because it is an Italian blogsite. I can't help you out with whether or not a blog is a successful way to sell because the blog I started is more of a showcase and place to blab at myself rather than an actual shopping-oriented thing, but I can sure help you out with the basics and the other questions.

Here's where you can learn plain and simple what a blog is, how it works, and what you can do with it. It's a series of articles, so when you finish the introductory page, click the other links on the page to read on:

     http://computer.howstuffworks.com/blog.htm

Google is a good  place to start. They have a Blogsite at www.blogspot.com. The first thing you should do is roam around and check out the blogs there, look at the setup process, the availability of FAQs and other help options, then go on and investigate other Bloghosts (just google "blog hosts") , do some comparison shopping.

Actually setting up a blog is easy as pie even for people who aren't very tech-oriented. All the blogs I've seen have a selection of templates to use (which will be the "background" of your blog, the header, colors, columns, etc....like a webpage) which you can choose from for basic blog appearance, and easy to understand tutorials to guide you through the whole thing, as well as forums where you can get help.

ATTENTION - be very careful not to set up a blog on a bloghost which will insert pop-ups, banners or ads in your blog....for the same reasons that you will avoid this at all costs when you go shopping for a webhost if you decide to set up a website in the future. You hate pop-ups, I hate pop-ups, and so will every single potential customer who comes across your blog. Same thing for ads and banners, if you want to give a professional appearance to your web-presence, you don't want them cluttering and detracting from you and your work. This will definitely exclude a big chunk of blogsites, as most of them do insert ads, banners and pop-ups, unless you pay a fee. Blogspot to my knowledge does not have this problem.

Once you set up your blog, you should make sure to write on it every day, especially if you'll be selling through it. Even if you don't post an item every day, you should write a few words, maybe about what's coming, the occasional pic of what you're making at the moment, tidbits..anything, but you want people to feel you are around and attentive to whomever might come across the blog.

There are many people here who do sell through blogs, and no doubt can give you better input on the "keeping it going and attracting visitors" - there are loads of social networking sites that you can use to draw people to your blog, along with other methods, but that is an entire chapter apart :). Lots of artists keep blogs to attract people to their websites, which is another twist on the theme.

There are HUGE disadvantages to setting up a free website. I made that mistake myself, though I suppose its always better than nothing. If you want my two cents, the blog is a better solution. The reason? Free web hosts are usually really free, in that you don't pay for them in cash money, no hosting fees and no domain name fees...they make you pay by plastering your website with banners, ads and pop-ups. Many of them are also frame-based - I won't explain frames because complicated - I can tell you that in the past almost all websites were frame-based, and now  most are not...because the major search engines tend to discard frame-based websites. If you aren't very tech savvy, you'll have a hard time finding out if a webhost is frame-based or not....they don't usually state that they are, wonder why? .

The best and most awesome thing I've ever come across on the web is my own web-host. When and if you do decide to set up a website, consider them. No, I don't work for them, but you'll think I do when you're done hearing me talk about them LOL! I'm on Mister.Net (www.mister.net).

I bought a domain name for 35 dollars including a year of free hosting, and once a year I renew my domain name for 35 dollars. I pay NOTHING else.

No hosting fees, no accessory fees, no hidden clauses and mumble jumble. I have NO ads, banners or pop-ups, my website may have been down in all maybe 5 hours in the past two and a half years, I can receive email through my website, the basic package offers more than sufficient bandwidth, I have a control panel where I can see basic statistics, my website loads quickly despite numerous pics and pages, I was picked up by Google only a week after I'd been online, and last but not least - their tech support ROCKS! I get answers to questions and help even on Sundays, and the guys are so patient and nice - though I rarely need to contact them. The bottom line is that they provide the service and satisfaction that you'd expect from a webhost which costs 10 times as much.

Hope that helps, Alice! I'm sure you'll get more specific feedback from the other commercial blogging artists here, but in the meantime I hope my input is useful

I use Blogger, and I'm very happy with it. Give it a try! If you don't like it, you don't have to keep doing it. It's free and very easy to do. There's a link to my blog in my signature line if you want to check it out.

    Re: I want a blog

I've used both Blogspot and LiveJournal.  I will say LiveJournal is better if you want to be a part of a community.  That seems to be its strength.  It's also seems to be a younger crowd, which may or may not make a difference to you.

Just beware of taking blogging too personally or getting too personal.  No comments does not equal a personal rejection of you.  Blogs are 10 for a penny these days,  so if you're looking for personal affirmation of what you're doing, you may be disappointed.   Also, beware of giving away too much personal information that crawlers might use to break passwords or answer "reset password" questions with (i.e., birthdays, family names, dog's name.)

Decide exactly what you want your blog to do for you.

Wow!  Thanks, Peachtree for asking that question - it's something I've also considered, but had no clue where to turn.  My website is very basic, and I've been thinking of adding a blog either within it, or have one separately.

So a BIG HUGE Thanks to Original Sin too!  What a great answer - and very informative.  I think this is one of the most useful forum discussions I've come across in awhile! I look forward to checking out everyone's blog sites sometime soon.  And finding time to set up my own!

    Re: I want a blog

I have several blogs (several too many because I can't keep all of them up to date). One is with Wordpress which allows a shopping cart. I used PayPal. My website is with doteasy.com ($25.00 a year for a website with no ads) and it has a blog. Freewebs.com ($20.00 a year for a website) has a blog as well. They're fun and, yes, be careful to not give out personal info.

The management of the blog page looks very similar to this Forum page. If you can reply to messages here you should have no trouble using a blog.

    Hi Alice,

I just wanted to add a link to another forum topic about getting notice on the web.  I reccomend using Squidoo in addition to whatever blog you choose.  Also, here are some links to really popular free blogging sites: Blogger, WordPress, TypePad.

    Re: I want a blog

A blog is the easiest way to start out promoting your work. For there, you can decide whether your work is popular enough to warrant it's own website. And, if you do go the website route, you can do it very cheaply if you shop around! After purchasing a domain for about $40, I found someone to design my site for free, and I pay only $10/ month for hosting! Not a bad investment!

     Good luck!

Lone Beader, both your blog and website are great!

Has anyone had experience with GoDaddy as a website host?

     Thanks, Peachtree! :D

I don't know about GoDaddy, but I think they are popular. I originally purchased hosting directly through my webdesigner, but recently she has teamed up with Revcom. I looked at their prices and they seem reasonable, and so far I am happy with their customer service. Hope that helps!  :D

Go daddy is ok, if the website remains "small"

But if your looking for better functions, there are other sites that offer shopping carts, search features etc.

Go daddy isn't really that easy to use once you start "expanding' on a web site.

When looking for a hosting sight, what are some things I need to look at to compare?  I want a website that I can expand fairly easily, have multiple picture options (after clicking on the thumbnail)and eventually have a shopping cart--at the very least.

    Re: I want a blog

Storage is one, the amount of actual space on their servers to store your pictures and html pages.

The other is bandwith or transfer, which is the amount of access to your site.  Free sites, like Geocitites, have very low bandwith limits which is why you are often told the page is unavailable; the number of kilobytes the site is allowed to transfer has already been reached.  I host our family site at Bottomline web hosting. The example shown here shows what comes with it.  Some of what you see is types of files you can run on that server (since server software is required to run some things.)  I chose them because they seemed reasonable, and I used MS Frontpage to build my site (which requires Frontpage extensions to be loaded on the host.)

Which brings me to the next thing:  how savvy are you?  Do you plan to build it yourself and load the files?  Does the hosting site offer a "control panel" to load files, or does it require you to use an FTP program?    Does the hosting server have its own web design software to build your pages or do you need  to find one?  (No worries, plenty of free stuff available if you don't want to buy.)

If you're planning on paying someone to do it all for you, some issues are not "issues" for you.  You're basically just buying the lot for someone else to build you house on.   You just need to make sure the lot is big enough and accessible enough for what you want to do.

    Re: I want a blog

Great information Lisa!  I consider myself computer illiterate (I can do basics like Word, Excel, and have become very adept at surfing the web for beads ), but to create a website would be way over my head.  I do have a hubby that is good at making computers do lots of stuff, but he's never built a website.

So, what do I need to look for in terms of storage space, bandwith---just how big should that 'lot' be for the average jewelry site?

    Thanks!

    Re: I want a blog

I don't have a site myself so I really don't have a number to throw out, but I would guess the size of your jewelry pictures directory would be a good place to start since pictures are going to be the bulk of your bytes storage.  Plain text html doesn't take much space at all.  Of course, videos and pdfs are going to be big files as well if you plan on hosting those.

How much space is on your hard drive and how much has been filled?  Storage is cheap nowadays.  You can get gigs of space for little money.  Bandwith needs are harder to gauge since those are traffic related.  You might start with a lower package and find out what happens if you exceed those limits.  Do you get billed for overage or are people simply denied access to your site?

Just a few thoughts.  I've got limited experience as you can tell.  :D

yes, i would use Blogger.com as your blog posting portal and its free if you use their server but i believe you will  have the domain blogspot in front of your url unless you get your own domain.
