    Sand and sky (bead embroidery)

This necklace features two lampworked beads by the fabulous Melissa Vess of Inner Realm Creations. The focal bead suggested waves of color to me, and I used seed beads ranging in size from 15° to 6° in a rainbow of colors on a base of ivory and gold. The japanese maille is 16 and 20 gauge 14k gold-fill; this bead-embroidery necklace is princess length.

If you like my stories, Sand and sky is on my blog, Jewelry Tales.

    Thanks for looking!

Beautiful! I love how you incorporated wire into your design, and I really like how your clasp looks. Great job!

Thank you! I like the larger clasps with heavier necklaces; they feel better on the back of the neck, lol.

Very nice work incorporating the wire with beadwork.

It looks like this piece would hang very well when worn.

Any tips for getting an embroidered piece like this with mix media to hang well? Do you practice laying with a sample layout first?  Or have you simply done enough of these to get a feel for the weight & design?

Thank you! I use the time-honored system of trial and error. Lots and lots of error.

To test the balance before finishing the pieces, I basted the rings to the back of the embroidery, linked them together, and tried it on. I had to move them a couple of times, but it's sure a lot easier to do before the piece is finished.

I've found that collars have to be slightly cone-shaped to fit comfortably; not a lot, but just a little. Good ol' trial and error again!

WOW!  Embroidery and Japanese maille combined in a necklace.  That is like nothing I've ever seen.  The small picture doesn't do justice to the colors and patterns.  I thought it was pretty nice and wanted to see it closer up.  When I enlarged it, it stunned me. You do some of the most original work I've ever seen and at the same time is has such structure.

MAGNIFICENT!  I, too, clicked to see the larger picture, and that is where your true artistry comes through.  I adore your color selection...serene, yet vibrantly alive.  The balance of this piece is perfect!  Well done!
