I know exactly what you mean - and I'm sure we are all in the same boat about the ever-so-fast-approaching Festive season... yikes!

I only just last weekend started thinking about gifts that will save me money (especially in these times). I found a great downloadable book of Kumihimo patterns at www.howtokumihimo.com that might be of interest.

The patterns are just wonderful, and great value for money. I have completed a bracelet and it's already wrapped and ready for December 25th!

I remember reading somewhere that Laura McCabe, who also works in archeology, actually found evidence of beadwork at a colonial site. I can't recall when or where I read this, but a quick email to Laura would confirm it. I think what she found was a wall hanging or decorated object.

Addie--there is a long and deep history of European beading and there is a lot of evidence that the Puritans were just anti-bling--some sects didn't even use buttons as they were considered too fancy.

At first I thought the Loops & Lace was shuttle tatting with beads and was discouraged to try it. I can do most anything with a needle and thread, but a shuttle will remain a mystery to me. As I watched the "how to" video, I was thrilled to see it was needle tatting!

I'm glad to have seen "Tips on Tatting" on a B&B Newsletter or else I may not have stumbled onto this posting on my own account.

Thank you B&B for another elegant bead design and new technique! I can't wait to try this pattern. Keep up the good work with the website, too.

What a fascinating concept, Lynne! I'd never thought about it before, but I'll bet you're on the right track.

I wonder...do you think that maybe the colonists also shied away from beadwork partially because beads were so embraced by the Native Americans? Was that a way for them to further differentiate themselves from the local population?

Following your theme - for those in and around New York there's a great display on at the moment at the National Museum of the American Indian called Identity by Design. The display showcases an array of Native American clothing; some of which have thousands of beads! I believe it's on through September 09.

You can get so much inspiration and encouragement from a group of fellow creative individuals. One place that I've had personal success with is www.meetup.com. It's an online community designed to help you find and "meet up" with fellow artists and crafters. They have groups for everything! Jewelry-making, photography, cooking, and yes...beading. :)

Take a look at the local craft stores and the classes they offer. Often they know local beaders. Quilt shops are another alternative - many beaders are into more than one medium. Quilters sometimes bead or have their art quilts embellised by local beaders.

Review Community School class offerings - local beaders may be teaching some of those classes.

Use the internet for local community meeting calendars such as I-neighbor.org.
