Swarovski crystals come to the opera

This past Saturday, the Los Angeles Opera opened its revival of Giacomo Puccini's Tosca, and nearly 200 Swarovski teardrops were at center stage.

That’s because, as the Los Angeles Times reports, Swarovski lent the opera house the tiara, necklace, and earrings worn by diva Maria Callas (1923-1977) in the Metropolitan Opera’s 1956 interpretation of Tosca. Swarovski estimates that the set is now worth $85,000. Not surprisingly, the jewelry was hand-delivered to Los Angeles by Swarovski’s cultural consultant, must be accompanied by a guard when it is brought to the stage, and is under lock and key at all other times.

Swarovski was a long-time collaborator with Callas, and is now touring an exhibit of the jewelry she wore in 18 different operas. To learn more about Callas, her jewelry, and the Swarovski tour, click here.
