In our VintageStyle Jewelry special issue, we included a fold-out section called “Recent eras in jewelry history.” In this article, Lynne Soto described the characteristics of the Victorian, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Edwardian, Art Deco, and Retro eras. Each chapter in jewelry history is illustrated with pictures of fabulous pieces from the era.

It appears that Bead&Button is not alone in wanting to chronicle jewelry history. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Museum has announced that it is creating the GIA Historical Collection, “a comprehensive assemblage of jewelry, object d’arts, and gemstones from all time periods and cultures world-wide.”

The GIA already boasts some beautiful, rare pieces, but intends to amass a collection that spans all jewelry history. GIA spokespeople expect that the collection will travel with experts and lecturers.

Naturally, the GIA is looking for donations from jewelry enthusiasts just like you! Pieces donated to the collection will be documented by the GIA’s Richard T. Liddicoat Gemological Library and Information Center and cared for by trained GIA staff.
