VintageStyle Jewelry: Value vs. cost vs. worth

During the past few weeks, I’ve received many phone calls and e-mails from readers who are interested in making my design for an Edwardian choker that is shown in the our VintageStyle Jewelry publication.

The materials for the necklace include sterling silver double-twist tube beads and Swarovski bicone crystals. These items, plus a sterling silver extender clasp, will cost approximately $65.

Now before you discount making this necklace because of the cost of materials, consider what an antique Edwardian choker or necklace would cost. I did a little research on the Internet and located a sampling of antique Edwardian-period necklaces. A simple pearl-and-platinum choker was priced at $14,500. A more intricate necklace of diamonds (40 carats worth) set in platinum and 18k yellow gold was offered for $144,500. A large pendant of filigree-work platinum set with sapphires that hung from a silver chain was priced at a mere $7,250.

Compared to those prices, my vintage-style version is a real bargain.

Happy beading,

Lynne

How many times do we just go in a store a blow $65 on a few pieces of junk that everyone else has.  The value of the necklace is not in the cost of the supplies.  The value of the pieces I design is priceless.  I get the joy of the creation, the fact it is one of a kind, either for myself or for someone else.  You can't beat the feeling when someone loves what you made and you get to say...Thank you, I made this!

Do you know where you can get these sterling silver double-twist tube beads?  I've tried a few websites and search on google to no avail. Thanks

I purchased the double twist beads from Rio Grande. The beads are located on page 393 of the 2007-2008 catalog. The item number is 693-843. The phone number for Rio Grande is 800-545-6566.
