Well I've made it here on my Beadventure to Iceland, even though my trip got off to a bit of a rough start. First, mechanical issues caused me to miss one of my connections. So instead of enjoying my first night in Reykjavik, I spent Tuesday night in an airport hotel in New York. On the bright side, I wasn't sleeping in the airport, but still...no luggage for me.
When I did finally arrive (5 time zones later) at 6:20 am, I was still in the same clothes I started in two days ago. It was gray and raining, and I was a bit jet-lagged. But the rest of the beaders welcomed me warmly, and off we went in our mini-bus.
Along the three hour drive to our hotel, we stopped to see one of Iceland's many waterfalls. It was at this point, while I was searching for a warmer jacket and a raincoat to wear, that we realized my luggage was nowhere to be found. A quick call later confirmed that it in the rush to get going, it had been left behind at the Reykjavik hotel. It would be delivered to our new remote hotel the next day, but that meant three days for me in the same clothes.
I lucked out though. My generous traveling partners took pity on me in my none-too-warm t-shirt. And between everyone, I was lent a jacket, sweater, and scarf so that I could head out with the group to enjoy the sights (Maggie even had a spare toothbrush, which was much appreciated!).
Once we were all bundled up, our guide Bragi (Bry-ee) Ragnarsson led the way as we hiked up slippery rocks to walk behind the waterfall. It was loud and chilly and very very wet. But it was so breath-taking, I didn't hear a single complaint. Between the waterfall's mist and the rain, most of us were soaked through. Luckily we had the rest of the bus ride to our next hotel to dry off.
