Changing tastes in jewelry

Earlier Ann Dee wrote about regional trends in jewelry design and how our surroundings can affect our collective choices and trends. And that got me thinking. What I find even more interesting is not how a regional group of people's styles change and influence one another, but more how one specific person's tastes can change so drastically over time.

Picture this. Your entire childhood, asparagus was your mortal enemy. And then one adult day it's sitting in front of you at a formal reception, and your manners force you to try it. Why, it's delicious! How did you never know of this tasty vegetable before? And you realize that asparagus never changed. But something in you must have.

I'm not sure what shifted in me, or when. But I've noticed that I've been gravitating toward gold tones lately in jewelry that I either make or purchase for myself. This wouldn't normally seem odd except that I've always been a "silver girl." Those clean white metals of silver, platinum, steel, and white gold have consistently struck some harmonious chord within me. For as long as I can remember, I've had a slight (forgive me, those of you in the "gold camp") distaste for the yellow shades of metals like gold and brass. They felt obvious, brash, loud, and almost gaudy to me.

But I've watched my tastes change, seemingly on their own. Something clicked within me, and now gold tones are my new-found gourmet asparagus. Though silver's still my favorite, and quite predominant in my jewelry collection, now I can appreciate the subtle warmth of gold. I find myself enjoying the mature, sophisticated side of this yellow metal. And I especially like how well it pairs with my beloved silver, lending a dignified edge to a otherwise possibly casual piece.

So you can see what I mean, I snapped a photo of my new favorite earrings. They're made by Andy Cooperman, and I bought them as a souvenir after I had the pleasure of taking his Master Class at the Bead&Button Show this year. (Those central gold parts within the silver rings are cast from saguaro cactus skeletons!)

I know I'm not the only one to feel a metamorphosis like this. What do you like now that you never would have even considered before? Is there a nemesis stitch that you've rediscovered? Or a type of bead that you can't get enough of now?  I'd like to hear your comments. What's your former "yuck vegetable" of beading?

For me it has been a color rather than a style or stitch.  I've had a fascination with color my whole life beginning with organizing my Crayola box of 64, but i've always kind of detested orange...until the last couple of years.  now I can't get enough of it.  When shopping for beads the orange shades are always first to grab my attention, and when getting out supplies for a new project all my lovely orange beads seem to jump to hand.  Problem is I can't really wear orange myself, so beloved, warm, joyful orange shows up in many of the pieces I have for sale.

HAahahh - I love the asparagus example... for me that would have to be avocado :-D

Well I guess that I haven't found such a startling change in my taste in style or color... I do love the color turquoise - always have and always will. Don't you find that certain colors or shapes seem to communicate directly with your soul?

Changing tastes is very appropriate.  I never thought I would be interested in jewelry or beading.  Jewelry as art was good to look at.  Me make it! why i don't wear jewelry !.  So nine months after a neighbor had us all work on braiding beads for bracelets, I am searching for beads to make the spikey peyote and hours making and undoing bacelets and necklaces, AND wearing them

-How funny Nallabead, orange is one of my favorite colors too, especially lately. I often say it's the most underrated color. :)

-And Amanda, I do find that I'm consistently drawn to the same motifs or color palettes in my designs. I've always been fond of spirals. And the rusty/orangey/warm colors make me particularly happy.

-Monica, welcome to the world of making and wearing your beading. It's such a pleasure to wear something you've created...I have a feeling that you might be wearing more of your designs from now on. :)

Yep.. I hear you Addie :-D

For me it's turquoise and brown together... and recently with shells and pieces shell and pebbles.

Oh and Monica: I love the jewelry I make but seldom wear it. A few weeks ago one of my hunting dogs, (who suffers from being overly happy in life), joyfully lept up at me and tore my dangly earring right out of my ear with his teeth!!! He tore my ear well and truly. I kid you not.
