Bead shopping while traveling

Bead&Button editor Ann Dee Allen’s description of her recent travels made me remember my visit to Albuquerque, NM this past April with my husband’s family. Whenever I’m in Albuquerque I always do some shopping at the New Mexico Bead and Fetish store (it’s just off the square in Old Town). I enjoy looking at their selection of turquoise and hand-carved animal fetishes. The desert colors of the southwest are very different than Wisconsin’s rolling green hills so I’m inspired to design something that doesn’t look like the Midwest. Our family also has a game we play when I go bead shopping with my husband and two brothers-in-law in tow - they like to guess what I spent on the little bag of beads I carry around after shopping at a bead store. Of course their guesses are always wrong (usually on the low side), but they’re learning that the size of a bag of beads has nothing to do with its value –monetary or otherwise. Lynne

It's funny Lynne, I play that same little game with myself when I'm shopping for beads. Those little bags are deceptive! I'm getting better at guessing the total before the cashier tells me, but I haven't gotten one exactly right yet.

    Hi Ladies,

You reminded me of a recent trip I made to Italy. I was so very starving for some beading work and when I happened to come across a bead shop in a back street of Venice I went psycho :-D The up side is, as you said, the opportunity to find beads and things that you don't normally see at home, but the down side is when you fall in love with them and then can't get hold of them later on.

My sister has also brought me very wonderful beads that she bought for next to nothing in Africa.... guess I wont be getting a fresh supply of those either, in the near future.

I got some beads in Venice (Murano) several years ago, and I haven't been able to make myself use them!  Isn't that weird?  I just like to pull them out, look at them, and imagine what I'll use them for.  I'm probably afraid I'll run out of them before I'm done... or I just need the right project to inspire me to use them. :)
