Born and raised in North Carolina, Dawn Vertrees was surrounded by artistic talent from an early age. Dawn's father, Hugh Whisnant was an extremely talented and accomplished artist, his works have been displayed in prominent public buildings throughout the South. Although Dawn has long had an interest in sculpting, her first career was in the tradeshow industry as a graphic artist and exhibit designer. Having weathered more than 25 years full of tradeshow floors and frequent flier miles, it was the fallout of 9/11 that convinced Dawn to get back to her love of sculpting. Though Dawn has become known for her ability to sculpt very natural looking foliage, her real focus has been in expressing the natural effects formed by such details as the draping leaves of a Banyan Tree or the graceful curl of the tip of a fig leaf. It's this love of natural effects that makes Dawn's sculpted art so delightfully inspiring.
