    Buying finished jewelry

Do any of you still buy finished jewelry, either in stores or from other jewelry makers when you see things that you like?

even though I see tons of things I love, I do not. I have the capability to make my own pieces which I love too so why would I spend my money on jewelry?

I do, especially from other artists. Manufactured jewelry, no -- but artisan jewelry, yes.

I make quite a lot of my own jewellery but there are some things I'm not able to make from lack of skill or facilities so I buy that. I buy manufactured chains, for example, because although I can make chain life is too short to make small delicate links. More importantly though I buy from designers whose work I really like because I'm the kind of person who loves to have originals. If I put my mind to it I could buy an Eni Oken tutorial and make myself one of her designs but I'd rather have something made by the artist herself (I have her turtle tourmaline pendant). There's something nice about owning original art whether it's a painting or a sculpture or a piece of jewellery. I can't afford as much as I'd like <sigh> but I buy it when I can.

Sometimes I do buy finished jewellery... But that is very rare. It really has to be special or something I can´t make. I do my own pmc toggles and glassbeads as well, but If I come across something very special, I´ll buy it. I recently bought a dragon bead fom Pam Dugger - amazing beads! Her alias on ebay is Lady-fish.

I do buy finished jewelry as well. If I like it, I'll buy it. Either from other artists or from a store. Doesn't matter.

    RE: Buying finished jewelry

I will buy jewelry if it's something I cannot make. For example, when me and my husband got engaged, we purchased my engagement ring. There is no way I would have made the ring myself, as I have no metal working skills or stone setting abilities. The same would be for pendants which have precious stones. Unless I was very experienced at it, I'd be afraid of a stone falling out or something!

I too will buy from artists whose work I admire.

    Dear Debbie,

    Hi!

I have several friends who make jewellery, we all work with different materials and if I see something one of them has made that I like I will buy it, or we may exchange pieces, plus we often like to make each other something for a birthday, or Christmas present, for someone to think enough of you to mae something for you is very sweet. I will also buy small pieces from artists at art shows if I can afford it. I think making my own has actually increased my appreciation for the amount of work and thought involved.

    Love, Jan

I buy finished jewelry, but only if it's really special or floats my boat... for instance, my dad will buy me a pendant from this Hawaiian jewelry store every time we go to Maui to visit my sister. If it's costume, then it's either something I want to "copy" or something I can't make. Not too much stuff these days... getting older and wiser with the $$$ I could use for beads. [;)]

I will on occasion buy from another designer, especially if it's something in a technique I don't use. My most recent was a lovely set of chainmaille earrings.

    RE: Buying finished jewelry

Finished jewelry = jewelry that is already made (as opposed to purchasing parts to make jewelry & making the finished piece yourself)

I have purchased finished jewelry from time to time, especially when the jewelry is unique. That usually means it is jewelry made by an individual artist. I purchase it for myself as well as for gifts. Last year, in October, I broke my right hand and was in a cast until the week before Christmas, so making jewelry was OUT. I had no use of my right (dominant) hand AT ALL while I was in the cast. I bought a LOT of jewelry from my favorite jewelry maker back then! :)

I will purchase artisan jewelry that is not cold joined since I am allergic to torches. I will also support artists that are new but show some artistic flaire so they will be encouraged to continue.

I try to barter for beads as often as I can though. LOL
