Maybe something like suede, or ultra suede/suedette or a sandwich of two layers of fabric and some pelmet Vilene or timtex - a heavy duty interfacing used for baseball cap peaks, would be softer against the skin, it is a very dramatic look, you wouldn't need any other jewellery with this.

    Hi Jan,

You know, I love japanese things, and it hadn't even occurred to me that this was like an obi, but you're right, it is. That's an interesting concept in itself, I wonder if I can find some vintage obi fabrics....? I like the suggestion of suede too, I shall have to give that idea a go as well. Thanks for the feedback.

    Cheers

    Hello

Im in Australia - its winter at the moment, so the ring is quite comfortable - snugly warm in fact, but in summer I would imagine that it would way too hot to wear. Hard to get a durable, breathable, stiff fabric, although I imagine that silk with the cross stitch plastic sandwiched between might do the job.

    Hi!

I can recommend Kyoto Kimono to you, I buy their small sample packs once in a while, they are filled with small postcard sized pieces of Kimono silk of various patterns, ideal for small jewellery and quilting projects, sari fabrics might be nice too:

Did you say you made the beads, btw? Now, THOSE are truly a standout! [:)]

LOL, seriously, its okay, you can like or dislike it all you want. :) The feedback has been interesting.

No, I didn't make the beads, I got them from a supplier at a Bead Show:

    http://beadworx.com.au/CatalogueRetrieve.aspx?CatalogueID=5735&ProductID=69941
lots of other colours in the range, which are from Unicorne Beads in the USA.

I've seen them made into a necklace, and they are absolutely stunning. Its one of those beads that works best when clustered heavily together. No two beads are exactly the same colour or shape.

Thanks Jan, that's a great idea. When I win Lotto (ha ha) I'd love to go over to Japan and lush out on the crafts over there. But a sample pack or two will do in the meantime.

Im also starting to play with japanese Ojime beads - small wooden carved animals. Example of Ojime:

    Hi!

I have one of those Ojime beads, though I bought mine from Knot just beads I think, mine is a little frog playing the flute - it reminds me of Jeremy Fisher in Beatrix Potter's book. I like the Octopuses/Octopi ???? the way the tentacles are placed would be interesting to bead around, they would be ideal for freeform peyote.

Love the beads, not keen on the felt part (looks like a bandage to me!!!!).

I'd love to see those beads worked with some silver though - either a wired ring or something involving some sheet silver too.

Everyone loves these beads! I use a lot of the drops (not donuts) in bracelets and necklaces. I sell out every time I get a new shipment. I get mine from Jane's Fiber and Beads in TN. www.janesfiberandbeads.com. The colors are amazing! My next project is working on a ring. I'll let you know how it turns out!
