    Uncovering Cheap Wire???

With wire can you tell if its cheap wire by looking to see if their is a plastic wrap around it?
My thinking is that the makers do that so they can Technically say its 18-22- or larger because technically that is what the final product size is... so I'm confused, does plastic/rubber wrapping (thats clear rubber/plastic wrapping) mean the wire is cheap? no matter how much you paid for it?

Confusion is not my best friend, but it seems to be hanging around a lot....

    RE: Uncovering Cheap Wire???

I have never seen this, or heard of this. Ever.
Are you describing Artistic Wire, or some other craft wire, where there is a coating applied to the wire to give it a color? This coating can scrape off, and you may be thinking it is a plastic wrap... These craft wires may have a clear coating to protect the shine on basic metal color (silver, gold, bronze).

the coating I'm talking about you can actually take a small knife and make a slit and peel it off, Then And ONLY then can you scrape off color, I do this sometimes to give my Jewelry a unique look, but then I started wondering if that coating meant it was cheap. I have other wire that are the same gaige of whatever I'm using with that coating, and that wire doesn't Have a coating.....
Just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting ripped off...[B)]

If you can scrape off the coating with a knife all that means is that the wire is coated. Unless it's special wire with a high-end industrial use, just about any coating would come off under those conditions. It says nothing about whether the base wire is "cheap" - wire is what wire is and some materials are more expensive than others but no one is trying to cheat you by fattening up the wire by sneaking on a coating - you know the coating is there because that's a feature and characteristic of the wire.

I think I know the wire you are talking about. it's a type of craft wire that has a plastic coating around it so that the wire isn't marred in shaping... i think it's a cheaper craft wire not neccesarily meant for professional jewelry design (i've seen it in the kids sections of craft stores sometimes) but i suppose you can use whatever you'd like... hope that helps.

Yes thats it, a friend bought me some and I can't seem to do anything with it but I didn't want to toss it if it was expensive. and i didn't want to hurt their feelings, but I did tell my friend afterwards that gift cards usually are better for craftors and artists because you can never truly tell what that craftor is going to be inspired by.
    Thanks!
