    Best wire for beaded keychains?

A friend wants me to make a set of keychains for her using wire, Swarovski beads and some bigger beads she found. What kind of wire is best for this? I know, the thickest that will fit through... but I've never done this before and have to order it online... I was thinking 20ga Sterling Half Hard Wire from the little bit of info I found online. The Swarovski beads are 4-6 mm. I have a few of the headpins from the, but they are 24 ga and way too soft/short.

Why would you use sterling for that (unless she wants it, of course)? Artistic wire has a beautiful "Non-tarnish Silver" wire which is sterling plate over copper for about $4 per 20 feet, depending on the wire gauge (18g is 15 feet for $6). If you're using 4mm beads you might want 22gauge, which is really cheap! Non-tarnish silver is the name of the "color". I use it all the time. It's durable, sparkly just like SS and never needs to be cleaned because it has a clear-coat of resin on it; keeps it bright!
    Have some fun with it!

I really have no idea.... never done this before :) Artistic wire sounds like it should be just fine. Does it "harden" like silver? Obviously keychains take a lot of abuse, and I'd hate for it to get mangled, etc.

You need a hard, tough wire to stand up to daily use. 20g isn't going to last long. Plus, if they are long and dangly (spelling), they are likely to bend and get straighten repeatedly, even heavier gauge wire will break in a short time.

Think about short segments linked together, rather than a long wire running thru the beads and use sterling or copper wire in a heavy gauge - I'd say 16awg is the minimum thickness.

I agree with loopy. I have a dangle on my phone and it gets tugged and yanked a LOT so it has to be strong. At least as strong as a bracelet, if not stronger.

Yes, Artistic wire will work harden but since it's got a copper core it doesn't harden as much as pure sterling. I use Artistic wire a lot but I wouldn't use it for a cell phone dangle unless it's 16 or 14 gauge and, like loopy says, in short rather than long elements. And I would use wrapped loops, no jump rings or eye loops, for added strength and durability.

The only problem with using the heavier gauge wires is that your crystals aren't going to fit through it. I think that 20 or 22 is the thickest you can use with 4mm Swarovski bicones.

I usually wire wrap each bead or 2 individually and then connect them together - that way there's nothing to get bent out of shape. When I do leave a dangle, I usually "harden" it by flattening the wire on my steel thingy with the hammer. I use them on my cell phone charms, up to the size of a quarter, and I've never had a problems with them (18g wire).
