    Reduction frit

    Is it possible to work reduction frit with a hot head?

    Yes, although you do it a little differently than with an oxygen/propane torch. To create a reduction atmosphere, you need to reduce the amount of oxygen in the flame. There are several ways to do that. What one of my customers suggests is to take a piece of fiber blanket and wrap it around the head (not so that the flame hits it, but so that it covers the holes on the side of the torch). That will reduce the amount of oxygen that gets into the flame mixture, and make it into a reducing atmosphere.

    Thanks for the tip. I tried the blanket (well, towel actually) idea yesterday. I used light blue iris reduction frit. The thing is, I thought it would look kind of blue, but it turned totally silver once I reduced the flame. Is it supposed to do that? It's nice looking, but I thought it would have some color, and variation. I was a little disappointed.
