Why no monitors on the forum over the weekend?

This seems to be the time when they are needed the most. We are now spammed by a cigarette ad, and some one calling himself Ghost. Printing vile things that make a person sick!!!!! Does not have the guts to say who he is. The quality of this forum in language and topics is being severly effected. All the spammers know you aren't here. It would surely help the morale of the forum if someone could delete these things as fast as they come on. Patti

They work M-F putting our magazines together--And this forum is an extra perk that we get--we're LUCKY they have the time to take care of things when they're sitting in the offices Mon-Fri, (all while trying to get the mag work done with deadlines to meet) do you think it'd REALLY be fair to ask them to work on weekends too?? I think they'd sooner just say "screw it" and pull the forum, and I wouldn't blame 'em.

On weekends, we just gotta deal with it and just be thankful that we know they'll be gracious enough to clean up when they get back to work on Mondays.

Let's not complain, let's say THANK YOU for all they do!

Amen and the spam can be caught on Monday. If it doesnot seem to pertain to beads or such I do not give them the satisfaction of opening

a while back I emailed Lyndsey and asked her why a trusted member (aka Russ) couldn't be given powers to delete posts etc.
It was explained to me that the forum has to be managed by the magazine to protect it's interests.

I absolutely agree that people need their weekend off but considering that spammers target this forum specifically at weekends (not to mention the flames that reach crisis point about the same time) shouldn't there be an altermative. Like someone being on weekend duty once in a blue moon?

Hey, wonderful as he is, let's not push the responsibility for the forum off on Russ either! He's a valued participant, and I doubt that he needs to feel like the forum police. The administrators do a pretty incredible job with this forum, all in all, and like M3ma1d said, this a great perk for all of us.

It's pretty clear from the Subject line when spam arrives. Why not just ignore it and go back to our beading!

Am I missing something, or did the two spams above, just magically disappear? Who ever did it, Thank You. Patti

This forum appears to have less spam and flames than many public forums. It may be that the moderators do a lot of cleaning during the week so it just looks like less.

Starting sometime Friday afternoon and continuing until Monday morning we do get our share of problems. I think a weekend moderator IS required here. Just as Kalmbach employees get the weekend off, most R&T employees take the weekend off. However, R&T staff check on our little forum a few times over the weekend from home. http://www.rings-things.com/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi Most of the aypearl droppings on our foum have happened at night or on weekends.

Speaking as a business owner with a forum I suggest B&B/Kalmbach assign a couple of staff to check in on this forum on weekends.

I was a volunteer section leader / moderator on the old Compuserve Crafts Forum. It was a very active forum covering a wide range of crafts. Being a moderator was a very fine line for a vendor to hold. I'm not sure I'd want it in this forum. I respect Kalmbach's decision to limit moderator powers to their own employees. I do think they should have somone with moderator powers check the forum several times over the weekend.

For the same reason Lyndsey told Karen that the "forum has to be managed by the magazine to protect it's interests" I believe the forum needs to be managed 7 days a week. The publishers intrerests are not protected over the weekend.

As tempting as it is to vote for Russ (we luvya dude!), he has a business to run.

Perhaps an intern would be a good choice for monitoring the board on the weekends? They could even do it from home. We're talking about someone who is working on their communications, web-related, or fine arts degree. In return, they get a reference and work history from Kalmbach Publishing for their resume when they complete their studies.

I'll bet they (Kalmbach) can use an extra helping hand M-F, too!

Perspective: For a public forum -- the spam, though annoying, is really pretty tame compared to many others I've seen.

Oooo!!! I'd volunteer to do it!!! I'm not a vendor and since I have 2 little ones, my sleep is all messed up and I'm on here all hours of the day and night!!! Oh I'm jumping up and down!!! I'll do it! I'll do it!

Alas, I don't live in Wisconsin so I guess I can't be classified as an "intern" to do it!
